Since the crash of a UPS freight flight in Dubai in 2010, air freight carriers have been very cautious in bringing in battery devices into the UK.
It has been reported that there were no declarations on the flight's manifest of any lithium batteries on board but at least 5 of the freight shipments contained packs of rechargeable lithium battery. The lithium batteries that were on-board this particular plane that sadly crashed in Dubai was not declared as hazardous cargo and the flammable batteries were distributed as normal cargo throughout the cargo decks. Also, the lithium batteries (this is the material used in MP3 players) should have been highlighted separately and handled as hazardous.
Though the exact cause of the crash is not known, investigators confirmed that the batteries on board made the fire worse. This single incident has affected the shipment of batteries and directly the turnaround of our premium promotional MP3 players. Our freight partners are DHL and UPS; UPS are the only company that would assist in bringing in the lithium batteries for the MP3 players into the UK. As the lithium battery materials are labeled as hazardous, the freight regulations on batteries affects the quantities allowed on each flight as lithium batteries can short-circuit and cause fires hot enough to melt a plane. The restrictions automatically translate into longer freight times for our MP3 materials. So it’s not all bad news!! We will continue to stress to clients to add, if possible, 3-5 days at least to the turnaround time required in order to receive the MP3 players in good time.
